Welcome to Douala

We arrived to the hot sticky air of Douala two days before Guy and Anja. Despite our objections, Guy sent a friend to pick us up at the airport for which we ended up being very grateful considering we arrived in the dark in what was obviously not a country much frequented by tourists. A long, bumpy drive brought us to the Parfait Garden, our home for the next two days.

As soon as we arrived, we were given strict instructions from Guy's friend not to wander off the main street our hotel was on. In the morning, we took his advice with a grain of salt, attempted some wandering and quickly decided that maybe sticking to our street was not a bad idea after all. Here is a look at our street from the balcony window. Note that the sounds in the background were not added. This is actually what is sounded like curtusy of a cell phone company and some very large speakers.

The next two days were spent wandering up and down that very street, hunting down internet cafes, buying pastries and attempting to take money out of the bank (a problem we never quite resolved over the next three weeks - thank goodness for emergency cash and Guy's generosity). We also found this to be a good way to pass the time:
