books and music

Since we've been at the beach these last couple weeks, and there is no surfing in this part of the world, we've spent the majority of our time reading. And in this time we've found a few very good reads. They are in no particular order:

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It's the true story of her life growing up in the States in an unstable family that's living in poverty. It's a fascinating read because it's true and that she has many, many crazy stories to tell from her childhood. And she's a great writer to boot.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel. We thought we bought a legitimate copy of this book on the street in Calcutta, but turns out when we opened it up it appeared to have been entirely a photocopy of the original... ooops. Next time we'll have to inspect our purchases a little more closely beforehand. This is one great adventure book I highly recommend. I don't want to give any details away because there is a great element of surprise involved.

The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell. It's basically an analysis of why things explode with popularity(or tip into mainstream) in society. He includes many really interesting stories of this happening, and provides some insight into the psychology behind it.

Oh yeah, you should also check out Joel Kroeker's new album. It's really great stuff as usual. I've been listening to it a bit at http://www.truenorthrecords.com/Albums.php?album_id=399, and you should too.
